Unplugged Performance and driver Randy Pobst had clear skies, a dialed-in Model S ‘Dark Helmet’ and a goal from years past as he raced to 14,115ft at the 101st running of the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
We are thrilled to announce the incredible success of Dark Helmet, the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model S Plaid race car, at the 2023 101st running of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This marked Unplugged Performance’s fourth consecutive year competing at Pikes Peak and the third consecutive year with Dark Helmet, and it was a record-setting run that will go down in history.
Dark Helmet, driven by the skilled Randy Pobst, achieved a remarkable sub-10 minute run, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:54.901. This outstanding achievement is a testament to the capabilities of both the driver and the car. In the qualifying rounds, Dark Helmet secured a spot in the prestigious “Fast 15” and went on to claim an impressive second place in its class. Overall, Dark Helmet secured an incredible 10th place finish out of 66 talented drivers, solidifying its position among the elite contenders.
One of the most significant highlights of Dark Helmet’s performance was setting a new record for the fastest modified electric vehicle (EV) at Pikes Peak. This record-breaking achievement showcases the power and potential of electric vehicles and highlights Unplugged Performance’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV performance.
What makes Dark Helmet’s achievements even more extraordinary is that it competes against purpose-built race cars despite being a modified luxury family sedan. With a weight of nearly 5000 pounds, double that of its top competitors, Dark Helmet defies expectations and proves that a well-tuned, modified EV can hold its own on the demanding racecourse.
Unplugged Performance Upgrades: Dark Helmet is equipped with a range of Unplugged Performance upgrades, ensuring optimal performance and control. The suspension enhancements include UP X Ohlins TTX 4-way Pikes Peak Spec coilovers, billet adjustable front upper control arms, camber and toe cars, bushings, and sway bar. For improved braking capabilities, Dark Helmet features the SuperLight carbon ceramic big brake upgrade, boasting 15.5″ rotors, 6-piston front calipers, stainless steel brake lines, and a carbon fiber brake-cooling duct kit. The car rides on 19″ UP-03 Pikes Peak Spec wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan A005 Biomass tires made from sustainable materials which not only create an immense amount of grip but align with Dark Helmet’s commitment to eco-friendly motorsports.
Along with the support from Yokohama, Unplugged Performance’s success at Pikes Peak would not have been possible without the collaboration with SpaceX STARLINK. Utilizing advanced equipment for high-speed internet connectivity, Unplugged Performance maintained seamless communication and operations throughout the week and on race day, ensuring optimal performance in the wilds of America’s Mountain.
Dark Helmet’s record-setting run at the 2023 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a testament to the exceptional engineering and performance capabilities of Unplugged Performance. This achievement further cements their position as industry leaders in EV performance upgrades. The remarkable performance of Dark Helmet demonstrates that electric vehicles have the power and potential to compete with purpose-built race cars, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of motorsports. We congratulate Randy Pobst and the entire Unplugged Performance team on this extraordinary accomplishment.
